Villa d'Este

A hundred and fifty-two rooms, a floating pool, eight tennis courts and a park of twenty-five acres, since 1873.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Villa d'Este stands at Cernobbio on the western shore of Lake Como, about an hour north of Milan. The Renaissance house was built from 1565 for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio and became a hotel in 1873; the accommodation — 152 rooms and suites — is divided between the Cardinal's Building and the Queen's Pavilion, named for Caroline of Brunswick, who owned the estate from 1815 and gave it the name it still carries. Four private villas inside the grounds are let whole. No two rooms are decorated alike, and the park around them runs to twenty-five acres of Renaissance and English-style garden, which Edith Wharton in 1903 judged the only old garden on the lake to keep much of its original architecture.

The infrastructure is unusual for a house of this age, and it is what puts the record in this register rather than only in the ones that record addresses. The heated outdoor pool floats on the lake itself; there is a children's pool and an indoor pool besides. Eight tennis courts, six of them clay, a squash court, a sauna and steam bath, a jogging track and a sailing and watersports operation occupy the grounds, with the Villa d'Este golf club a short drive away and playing privileges for guests. Dining runs to the formal Veranda, where the dress code still holds, and the Grill for the garden-side alternative. The house is seasonal and its calendar is the lake's; it also hosts the Concorso d'Eleganza each spring, which is the estate's own event rather than a hired-in one.

Departments that predate the brands. A floating pool, eight courts and a watersports operation were assembled here over a century and a half, before any international group wrote a standard for them.

A hundred and fifty-two rooms, each different. Scale and individuality usually trade against each other; this house runs a large inventory without the repetition that normally makes it possible.

Who it is not for

Villa d'Este is wrong for guests who want a contemporary room: the house is furnished in period, the Veranda keeps its dress code, and neither is likely to change for a new arrival. It is wrong for anyone seeking a house positioned a class above the local norm by authorship and price — the lake holds such houses, and Fashion Resorts records them. And it is wrong for travellers who need the lake in deep winter, when the house is closed. For the address and the season as the reason to come, read Legendary Addresses; for the walled estate itself, read Private Resorts.
