Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

A full Mandarin Oriental resort — spa, floating pool, two restaurants — inside a historic botanical park on the Blevio shore.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como opened on 15 April 2019 in Blevio, on the eastern shore of the lake five kilometres from Como and forty-five from Milan, after the renovation of the property previously run as CastaDiva. The estate is a botanical park of about six acres holding nine buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the largest of them Villa Roccabruna, once the home of the soprano Giuditta Pasta. The inventory is seventy-five keys: twenty-one rooms, fifty-two suites and stand-alone villas whose number the sources do not settle — two by the opening announcement, and the estate holds nine historic buildings in all, almost all with a balcony and a lake view; the largest villa runs to three bedrooms on four floors. Interiors are by Eric Egan. The resort is seasonal, closing in the depth of winter.

For a lake hotel the infrastructure is unusually complete. The spa is the largest in the area, with heated indoor pool, heat and water circuits, four private spa suites, a beauty studio and a fitness centre; outside, a pool floats on the lake itself beside a sundeck. Dining runs to a fine-dining restaurant, L'ARIA, a bistro and bar, CO.MO, and a poolside bar, under executive chef Vincenzo Guarino; a Japanese kitchen appears in a guest review and nowhere the house publishes. The house keeps its own boats for arrivals and excursions, and the gardens are maintained as a botanical collection of some fifty species rather than as lawn. On a lake where most addresses are villas with a dining room, this is a resort with departments.

The complete brand on a shore that rarely has room for it. Spa, two kitchens, a bar, a pool on the water and a fleet, inside a walled park — the full Mandarin Oriental organism where neighbours run twenty-room villas.

Suites outnumber rooms. Fifty-two suites to twenty-one rooms, with kitchenettes in many, so that the property is lived in for a week rather than slept in for a night.

Who it is not for

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is wrong for guests who want to step out of the door into a town: Blevio is a village of a few streets, and Como and Bellagio are reached by car or boat. It is wrong for anyone seeking a house above the luxury norm, an authored hotel priced a class over the brand standard, which the register records in Fashion Resorts. And it is wrong for travellers who need the lake in February, when the resort is closed. For the walled park and its silence as the reason to come, read Private Resorts.
