The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort
Four kitchens, two pools, a spa on its own islet and an enclosed lagoon, on one of the lagoon's largest motus.
The St. Regis Bora Bora stands on Motu Ome'e, a reef islet on the northern side of the lagoon reached by the resort's own boat from the airport. It is one of the largest properties in Bora Bora by ground as well as by keys: the villas — overwater bungalows on the lagoon and beach villas set back among palms — are among the largest the South Pacific publishes, and the resort's own material puts its overwater villas at 1,550 square feet and upward. Three beaches, two pools including an adults-only one with cabanas, two floodlit tennis courts and a fitness centre sit on the same motu; the accommodation count is not published in a form this register could confirm and is carried here as open.
The four restaurants are the clearest measure of the completeness. Lagoon, over the water with glass floor panels, is the formal room; Te Pahu is the beachfront all-day kitchen where the Polynesian show runs; Bam Boo covers Japanese and wok cooking; Far Niente is Italian; the Aparima bar serves the main pool with swim-up seating and 727 is the sunset terrace. The Miri Miri spa stands on a small island of its own, across from the Lagoonarium — an enclosed, planted body of water where guests snorkel in an environment the resort maintains rather than on a reef it does not control. Butler service runs around the clock, which is the brand's own standard rather than the resort's, and a cultural ambassador programmes the days that are not spent in the water.
Six eating and drinking places on one motu. Formal, all-day, Japanese, Italian, a pool bar and a sunset terrace, each with its own kitchen or bar staff, on an islet where every crate arrives by boat.
A lagoon the resort can vouch for. The Lagoonarium is enclosed and planted, so snorkelling is a department with a standard rather than a swim whose quality depends on the weather.
Who it is not for
The St. Regis Bora Bora is wrong for guests who want a small house where the staff know them by the second morning: this is a large resort on a large motu, and distances are covered by bicycle and buggy. It is wrong for anyone seeking a house a class above the local luxury norm, authored and priced to match — that question belongs to Fashion Resorts. And it is wrong for travellers who want to walk into Vaitape for dinner: the resort is a boat ride from the main island, and its four kitchens are the alternative. For the motu itself as the reason to come, read Private Island Resorts.
