The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort
Seven venues, an overwater spa with a hydrotherapy pool, and a dive centre on twenty-two acres of Dhaalu Atoll.
The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli stands on its own island in the southern Dhaalu Atoll, forty-five minutes by seaplane from Velana International. The island is published at twenty-two acres — nine hectares by the resort's own reckoning, a discrepancy this register carries rather than settles — and holds seventy-seven villas, thirty-three on land and forty-four over the water, every one with a pool. The architecture is by Wong Chiu Man of WOW Architects and is unusually literal: the bar takes the shape of a whale shark, the spa that of a lobster, the overwater villas that of manta rays. The largest unit is the John Jacob Astor Estate, described by the house as an overwater estate of two bedrooms in some material and three in other, at well over a thousand square metres.
Seven restaurants and bars is a high count for seventy-seven keys, and the spread is the point: Alba for Italian and all-day dining, Orientale for Asian, Cargo for Persian, Crust on the beach, Decanter as a dedicated wine bar, the Whale Bar for the sunset, and a kaiseki room the resort names T•Pan. Sources disagree on whether the total is six or seven. The Iridium Spa is overwater, with glass-bottomed pavilions and a heated seawater pool the resort calls the Blue Hole. Vommuli House holds the recreation side — fitness, yoga, acupuncture — with the children's club alongside; the dive operation is a PADI Five-Star Gold Palm centre on a house reef. Butler service runs around the clock, and the island keeps its own clock an hour ahead of Malé.
Seven kitchens and bars for seventy-seven villas. The ratio is closer to a town than to an island resort, and it is what completeness looks like when the geography supplies nothing.
A spa with its own water infrastructure. Glass-floored pavilions and a heated seawater pool are plant, not decoration: they need engineers as well as therapists, on an island reached by seaplane.
Who it is not for
Vommuli is wrong for guests who want the thatch-and-timber Maldives: this is a designed island, and the shapes are meant to be noticed. It is wrong for anyone seeking an authored house priced a class above the local luxury norm — a different question, recorded in Fashion Resorts. And it is wrong for travellers unwilling to fly a seaplane, which is the only practical way in. For the island itself as the reason to come, read Private Island Resorts.
