Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa
The smaller Four Seasons Maldives: six venues, a spa on its own islet, a surf school and a turtle sanctuary.
Kuda Huraa lies in North Malé Atoll, twenty-five minutes by speedboat from the airport — the whole point of the island, since its sister at Landaa Giraavaru needs a seaplane and a schedule. The resort runs ninety-six villas in thatched beach bungalows and overwater villas, most with a pool, in a layout the house calls a village of flower gardens rather than a line along the sand. Four Seasons has held it since 1998, and the property today spreads beyond its own beach: the spa stands on a separate islet reached only by boat, which makes the crossing part of the treatment, and the resort's surf operation works breaks in the atoll that most Maldivian houses cannot reach.
Six eating and drinking places serve ninety-six villas: Café Huraa for all-day pan-Asian, the overwater Baraabaru for Indian at dinner, Reef Club for Italian at lunch and dinner, Kandu Grill on the beach for seafood and meat, a poolside bar and the Sunset Lounge. Three pools run between them — the main infinity pool, a children's pool, and an adults-only pool at the southern tip. The Marine Discovery Centre and the turtle rehabilitation work sit alongside a PADI Five-Star IDC dive centre, the tier at which instructors are trained; there is tennis, a yoga pavilion, a gym and a doctor on the island. Kids for All Seasons takes children from four to twelve at no charge, and the house does not put children under twelve in overwater villas.
A complete resort twenty-five minutes from the airport. Kuda Huraa runs six kitchens, three pools, a dive school and a spa island without the seaplane logistics its sister depends on.
The spa is a boat ride, on purpose. A treatment island rather than a treatment wing is a department with its own crossing, its own staff and its own weather problem.
Who it is not for
Kuda Huraa is wrong for guests who want the far-flung Maldives: it sits close to Malé, and the atoll around it is busy with traffic. It is wrong for anyone who wants the larger of the two Four Seasons houses — Landaa Giraavaru has eight venues, an Ayurvedic clinic and a marine research base, and this is the quieter register of the same brand. And it is wrong for families travelling with small children who have set their hearts on an overwater villa, which the house does not let to under-twelves. For the island itself as the reason to come, read Private Island Resorts.
