The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

A hundred villas over three islands and a quay, with a ring-shaped overwater spa and a marina village next door.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands opened in 2021 within the Fari Islands development in North Malé Atoll, about fifty minutes from the airport. The resort is not one island but three, plus an overwater quay, and the hundred villas — beach, overwater and stilted, from one to three bedrooms — all carry private infinity pools and the attention of an Aris Meeha, the house's name for its butler. The design is deliberately unthatched: minimalist volumes by Kerry Hill Architects rather than the vernacular most of the atoll builds in, which is the first thing a guest notices and the thing the resort is least apologetic about.

The completeness is arranged across the archipelago rather than stacked on one beach. Seven restaurants and bars run between a dedicated Culinary Island, the Grand Sunset Beach and Fari Marina Village: La Locanda for southern Italian, Summer Pavilion for Cantonese, Iwau for teppanyaki, Beach Shack for the family Mediterranean, Arabesque for Lebanese and North Indian, and the food trailer Tum Tum at the marina. The Ritz-Carlton Spa is a ring over the lagoon with nine treatment rooms, a suite, a salon, sauna and steam. The fitness centre runs around the clock; there is a tennis court with a resident professional, a dive centre and watersports. Ritz Kids takes children from four to twelve into an indoor-outdoor building with playgrounds, napping pods and a pool with a slide. The marina village adds boutiques, a beach club and a marine biology centre.

A shared village is a department too. Two of the seven kitchens stand at Fari Marina, so the resort runs a dining programme larger than its own ground, reached by a complimentary dhoni.

Nine treatment rooms for a hundred villas. The spa is sized as a working department rather than as an amenity, and it is built over water, which is plant rather than decoration.

Who it is not for

Fari Islands is wrong for guests who came for the thatched Maldives: this resort is modern, minimal and makes no gesture at the vernacular. It is wrong for anyone who wants an island to themselves — it shares an archipelago with neighbouring resorts and a marina village, and that is the design rather than a compromise. And it is wrong for those seeking an authored house a class above the local luxury norm, which is Fashion Resorts' question. For the shared island and what it means for privacy, read Private Island Resorts.
