Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa
Fifty-odd villas, four kitchens and a reef that rings the island, ninety minutes south of the capital.
Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa stands alone on its island in North Huvadhoo Atoll, one of the largest and deepest atolls in the world and far enough south that the resort sells a trip to the Equator as an excursion. Getting there takes an hour's domestic flight from Malé and a half-hour speedboat, which is the longest approach of any house in this register's Maldivian group. The inventory is small for a full-service resort — fifty-one keys by the figure most sources publish — in beach and water villas, the larger ones with private pools, and the Kiaali Residences at the top of the range. The island keeps most of its vegetation, and the villas are set into it rather than ranged along the sand.
What the island supplies, no resort can build: the house reef runs the full 360 degrees around it, which in the Maldives is uncommon enough to be the first thing the resort says about itself. The departments around that are four restaurants — The Dining Room for all-day international, The Island Grill for Maldivian-inspired barbecue, and two more the register could not name from the house's own pages — one bar, and the Vidhun Spa with an overwater gym and what the resort calls a bubble pond. A dive centre works the reef and the atoll's outer walls. For fifty-one keys this is a complete organism, and the ratio is the point: the same four kitchens that a hundred-villa island runs are here carried by half the inventory.
A reef that does not require a boat. Snorkelling from the beach, on all sides, in a country where most houses send guests out by dhoni — a department supplied by the geography and maintained rather than built.
Four kitchens for fifty-one keys. The completeness is the same as the big islands'; the arithmetic behind it is harder, because the payroll is carried by half the rooms.
Who it is not for
Hadahaa is wrong for guests who want to be an hour from the airport: it is a flight and a boat away, and the day of arrival goes to the journey. It is wrong for anyone who wants the scale of the northern resorts — eight kitchens, two children's clubs, a waterpark — because fifty-one keys cannot carry them. And it is wrong for those seeking an authored house a class above the local luxury norm, which is Fashion Resorts' question.
