Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru

A complete Four Seasons — four restaurants, a marine laboratory and an Ayurvedic clinic — run on forty-four acres of Baa Atoll.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Landaa Giraavaru is the larger of Four Seasons' two Maldivian resorts, a forty-four-acre island in Baa Atoll reached by a thirty-minute seaplane flight from Malé. Four Seasons has operated it since 2006. The inventory is published as 103 villas and bungalows — a figure two secondary sources give and the house's own site does not confirm — across the beach, the jungle interior and the lagoon, most with a private pool. Dining is carried by four venues: Al Barakat over the water with an Arabian menu, Blu Beach Club for Italian on the western sandbar, Café Landaa with Indian and Japanese kitchens, and Fuego Grill on the beach. The island has four pools, one of them Olympic length, a kilometre of beach on the Blu side, and a lagoon protected by a sea wall so that swimming is possible in every season.

What separates the property from a fine beach resort is the depth of the departments. The Marine Discovery Centre houses the Manta Trust's Maldivian project and a turtle rehabilitation unit, and its biologists lead guests rather than lecture them. The dive operation is a PADI Five-Star Career Development Centre, a rating the resort publishes and which its own site describes as covering instructor training. AyurMa is a resident Ayurvedic practice with doctors, Panchakarma programmes and accredited yoga therapy, run as a clinic inside the resort rather than a menu inside the spa. Kuda Velaa, the children's club, is complimentary from age four. The seaplane, the Flying Triggerfish, belongs to the resort. Every one of these could be a small business; here they are departments of one.

A full organism, an hour from the capital. Four kitchens, four pools, a dive school, a marine lab, a clinic and a children's club, each staffed to run every day of the year, on an island with no town to lean on.

Conservation is a department, not a brochure line. The Manta Trust is headquartered here, turtles are rehabilitated on site, and the reef work is published. The brand's completeness extends to the science.

Who it is not for

Landaa Giraavaru is wrong for guests who want a small island where the staff outnumber the villas: at 103 keys this is a resort at scale, with the movement that implies. It is wrong for anyone seeking a house above the luxury norm, with a named author and a price to match; that class is recorded in Fashion Resorts. And it is wrong for travellers who dislike seaplanes, the only practical way in. For the same brand at a quieter register, read Kuda Huraa; for the island itself as the story, read the Private Island Resorts card.
