Anantara Veli Maldives Resort
The adults-only half of the same lagoon: four kitchens, an overwater spa, tennis and a surf break at the door.
Anantara Veli occupies its own island in the South Malé Atoll, across a shallow lagoon from Anantara Dhigu and Naladhu, and the three are run as one estate by one operator with complimentary boats between them. Veli is the adults-only house of the three, all overwater and beach bungalows, and its character follows from that: no children's club, quieter beaches, and restaurants that admit children from the neighbouring island only at set hours. The surf is the other half of its character — the break the resort calls Anantara Veli Left works off the island itself, which is unusual in an atoll where most houses send guests out by boat.
Four of the lagoon's kitchens stand here: Cumin for South Asian, Baan Huraa for Thai out over the water, Origami for Japanese, and the Dhoni Bar, which admits no children at all. A guest of Veli may also use the kitchens on Dhigu, so the count a visitor experiences is seven rather than four — the same arithmetic as its sister, read from the other side. The overwater spa, the gym, tennis and badminton, an indoor golf simulator and the dive and watersports centre complete the ground; between the three islands the operator counts three gyms, two spas and a hammam. Completeness here is real and partly borrowed, and the card says so rather than quoting the larger number alone.
Adults-only, but not thin. Four kitchens, a spa, tennis and a surf break on one small island, with a second island's kitchens a boat ride away.
The break is on the property. A named surf wave working off the island itself is a department the geography supplies, and very few atoll resorts can claim it.
Who it is not for
Veli is wrong for families: it is the adults-only island of the three, and children staying next door are admitted only at set hours. It is wrong for guests who want a resort complete on its own ground — three of the seven kitchens a visitor uses stand on Dhigu. And it is wrong for anyone seeking an authored house priced a class above the local luxury norm, which is Fashion Resorts' question rather than this register's. For the lagoon and the estate shared between three houses, read Private Resorts.

- Whether Veli's restaurants number four or five depends on how the Yellow Fin Club is counted between the islands. Unresolved.
