Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah

Seven bedrooms, a crew of twenty-five and a nineteen-metre yacht, let only as a whole island.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Voavah is a Four Seasons let in its entirety and no other way: a private island in Baa Atoll, inside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, sleeping up to twenty people across seven bedrooms. The buildings are a three-bedroom beach villa, a two-bedroom water villa and the Beach House, which holds mezzanine suites over living rooms, a dining room, a gym, a library and the Loft Lounge. Four Seasons runs it from Landaa Giraavaru, forty minutes away by boat, and that relationship is what makes the arithmetic work: the kitchens, the dive school and the spa therapists of a 103-villa resort stand behind an island that sleeps twenty.

Completeness here is measured differently, and the register says so rather than pretending the usual count applies. There is no restaurant, because there are no other guests: twenty-five staff under an Island Chief cook what the party asks, where the party asks. The spa is a building called Ocean of Consciousness rather than a department with a treatment menu. The nineteen-metre Voavah Summer is on call day and night, with a dive instructor and a marine biologist among the crew, and childcare sits in the same list as diving and housekeeping. One kitchen that never closes and twenty-five people for twenty guests is a complete resort by a different route: not fewer departments, but departments without a schedule.

A ratio instead of an inventory. Twenty-five staff to twenty guests, where a full-service island runs perhaps one to one; the completeness is bought with people rather than with buildings.

The parent island is the plant. Voavah does not carry its own dive school or spa staff year-round — Landaa Giraavaru does, forty minutes away, and the register counts that as part of the organism rather than silently crediting it to the small island.

Who it is not for

Voavah is wrong for anyone who wants a resort: there is no restaurant to choose, no bar to sit at and nobody else on the island, and a guest who wanted a dining programme will find a kitchen that cooks only for them. It is wrong for a party too small to fill it — the island lets whole and prices whole. And it is wrong for those seeking an authored house priced a class above the local norm, which is a different question and Fashion Resorts' to ask. For the island as the subject rather than the setting, read Private Island Resorts; for the let-whole estate, read Private Resorts.
