One&Only Reethi Rah

Eight dining rooms, twelve beaches and two children's clubs on a reshaped island of forty-four hectares.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

One&Only Reethi Rah occupies one of the largest islands in North Malé Atoll, forty-five minutes from the airport by the resort's yacht or a quarter of an hour by seaplane. The island was reshaped during construction, which is why its outline gives some six kilometres of shoreline divided into twelve separate beaches rather than the single strip most Maldivian resorts work with. The villas — published as 118 by the house and as 122 by two travel sources, a disagreement this register carries rather than settles — were designed by Jean-Michel Gathy and stand either on their own stretch of sand or out on jetties over the lagoon, the largest of them two-bedroom residences with their own pools.

Scale here buys departments rather than crowds. Eight dining, bar and lounge venues cover Japanese at Tapasake, Italian at Rabarbaro, Middle Eastern at Fanditha, international at Reethi and Latin American at the ClubOne beach club, with a wine list the resort puts at more than five hundred labels. The One&Only Spa works through a programme of treatments with a pedicure studio by Bastien Gonzalez and a barber alongside. Club One holds a climbing wall, an art studio, two floodlit tennis courts and a FIFA-approved pitch; KidsOnly takes children from four to eleven or twelve, depending on which of the resort's own pages is read, and One Tribe takes teenagers. The one department the geography does not supply is a house reef: the island is partly reclaimed, and snorkelling starts with a short paddle or a boat.

Eight kitchens and two clubs at forty-five minutes' distance from the mainland. The island runs a town's worth of departments with no town behind it, which is the completeness this register measures.

Twelve beaches instead of one. The reshaping that cost the island its house reef bought it a shoreline that can be divided, so that scale does not read as density.

Who it is not for

Reethi Rah is wrong for guests whose Maldives is a house reef off the deck: the island is partly reclaimed and snorkelling begins with a paddle or a boat, which is the trade for its size. It is wrong for anyone seeking a small island where a dozen villas share one kitchen — this is among the largest resorts in the country, and it is organised accordingly. And it is wrong for travellers who want an authored house priced a class above the local luxury norm, which is the question Fashion Resorts asks. For the island itself as the reason to come, read Private Island Resorts.
