Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi opened in 2019 across three islands in the South Malé Atoll, reached by the resort's yacht from the airport in something between twenty-five and forty-five minutes depending on which published figure is read. The inventory is given as 119 villas by most of the resort's own material and as 117 or 122 elsewhere — beach, reef and overwater, every one with a pool, the reef villas a hybrid that stands over water but keeps a beach entrance. Separately let is Ithaafushi — The Private Island, thirty-two thousand square metres holding a three-bedroom beach villa, a two-bedroom overwater villa and a four-bedroom residence, for up to twenty-four guests together.
The dining programme is the largest in the country and the reason the record sits at Core: eleven venues, among them Terra in bamboo nests in the treetops, an overwater Zuma, The Ledge for Australian barbecue by Dave Pynt, Glow working an edible garden on the island, the Peacock Alley the brand carries from New York rebuilt as an overwater pavilion, and Amber for the sunset. The spa runs to ten treatment villas with an Aqua Wellness Centre the resort says is the first of its kind in the Maldives. Families get a waterpark and splash pad, the Stars Club for children from four to eleven, and Club Nova for teenagers; Nava is the beach club, with live music and all-day dining. Three islands mean distances, and the resort moves guests between them.
Eleven kitchens on an island with no town. A dining programme of this size is a payroll and a supply chain before it is a menu, and running it forty minutes from the mainland is the whole test.
Ten treatment villas, not ten rooms. The spa is built as separate buildings with their own water, which is a scale of plant most resort spas do not attempt.
Who it is not for
Ithaafushi is wrong for guests who want one small island and one kitchen: this is among the largest resorts in the Maldives, spread over three islands, and moving about is part of the day. It is wrong for anyone seeking an authored house priced a class above the local luxury norm, which is Fashion Resorts' question rather than this register's.
